We’re a superstitious bunch here at OiPolloi towers (one for sorrow, two for joy) so the arrival of Monday Mixtape #13 comes with some trepidation. Which dee-jay would we curse with the duties? No, that wouldn’t be fair, I thought it only right I took one for the team, step up to the plate and show down the evil spirits… with some ska, rocksteady, rub-a-dub and dancehall. Duppy conqueror style and pattern.
Of course that’s nonsense really, I just thought I’d better leave it a bit before indulging my own interests. The track that inspired the mix does have a Lucifer reference though – ‘Sugar Minott - Devil Is At Large’ – off the excellent Tempo Explosion LP. The LP was originally released on Sugar’s Black Victory label but was recently repressed by Dug-Out… Easily one of the most consistent and relevant re-issue labels there is for vintage reggae music (on this subject a mention must also go to our friends over in NYC – Deadly Dragon Soundsystem – those new Park Heights 7’s are tough).
If you like the mix you can catch me playing stuff like it alongside fellow sound-killer / Monday Mixtaper, Felix Hall, at HOTMILK, the monthly night I co-promote at Manchester’s Roadhouse.
Expect the full spectrum of Jamaican music – bluebeat through to bashment, a big stack of speakers and more girls than boys. If that’s your idea of a party too – make it a date (11.3.11) and don’t be late.
