Ole Andreas Devold came back from Germany with a knitting machine in 1853 and started making wool underwear for the fishermen of Ålesund. Nansen wore it across Greenland in 1888 and Amundsen took it to the South Pole in 1911, which is about as thorough a wear test as wool gets. Devold now knit everything at their own mill in Lithuania. We have the Adventure jacket and two merino socks. Manchester is warmer than the South Pole, marginally.
