Yvon Chouinard started Patagonia in Ventura, California in 1973, having spent the previous fifteen years forging climbing gear in a tin shed. Fleece, shells, insulation and the pile jacket that has kept people warm since 1985, made with as little damage as they can manage and repaired when it goes. One per cent of sales goes to environmental causes. The rest goes on fleece.
