Jackman started as Tanabe Meriyasu in Fukui in 1949, when Mitsugu Tanabe quit a government job after watching an American baseball team play in Japan and began knitting stirrup socks instead. By 1964 they were making the training wear for the Japanese Olympic team. This tee is their plainest: open-end spun American cotton with a dry, slightly rough handle, a thick binder-stitched rib at the neck so it does not go floppy, and no pocket, because it is meant to go underneath something.
