L for Lacoste, 1 for the petit piqué, 2 for the short sleeves and 12 for the prototype René Lacoste finally settled on in 1933, after eleven he did not. The petit piqué is the reason it worked: a cotton knit with a fine mesh structure that stays light and lets air through, the whole point of cutting the sleeves off a tennis shirt. Ribbed collar and cuffs, mother-of-pearl buttons off a proper shirt, classic fit. White, which is the colour it started in.
