Steven Smith designed the 574 in 1988 as the cheap one, a stripped back version of the 576 for people who wanted a New Balance without paying for a New Balance. It has been in more or less continuous production ever since. ENCAP midsole, suede and mesh upper, grey. Grey suede New Balance is basically a uniform at this point.
