Persol was started by Giuseppe Ratti, a Turin optician grinding lenses during the First World War, and the 649 arrived in 1957 for the city's tram drivers, who needed something big enough to keep grit out of their eyes. Marcello Mastroianni wore a pair in Divorce Italian Style four years later and the tram connection was quietly forgotten. The lenses are actual crystal, the temples flex on the Meflecto system, and the whole thing is still made in Italy.
